Singing healthily means using your voice in a way that is both natural and safe. It involves employing the whole body to protect the vocal cords from fatigue and possible damage. Babies are born with the ability to do this – it’s the reason they are able to cry loudly for long periods without their throats becoming sore. As we get older, social inhibition causes most of us to feel awkward about making that much noise, so we start using less of our body when we sing. Eventually we forget how to sing naturally, and we end up relying on just our throats to produce the sound.

Singing safely and healthily means rediscovering how to use the instrument we were all born with.
